The Karst is a rocky plateau that embraces Trieste and covers most of the eastern part of Friuli Venezia Giulia and extending beyond the old border, in Slovenia. An area of great ecological importance, both for its particular geology for the flora and fauna that characterize it.
As well as by an exceptional beauty, the Karst is characterized by the presence of many points of historical and cultural interest: paleontological and archeological sites, typical villages perfectly integrated in the environment of the Karst and numerous fortifications of the Great War are the testimonies of the eventful past of this fascinating border.
The hinterland offers typical products of high quality: in addition to the wines, particularly whites as Vitovska and Malvasia, the extra virgin olive oil of the Carso is greatly appreciated by connoisseurs, as are also cheeses and honey.
